Slot is a word used to describe something that is open and available for use, like an airport gate, a ship’s cabin or a car park space. The word is also commonly used in gambling, where it refers to the number of reels or paylines on a slot machine. There are many different types of slots, each of which has its own unique rules and bonuses. Some of the most popular types of slot include progressive jackpots, high payouts and free spins.
The earliest sense of the word, from c. 1747, is probably “bar or bolt fastening a door, window, etc.” It is related to Dutch sloof “door-lock, lock,” from Proto-Germanic *slutila- (source of German slut, Old Frisian sletel, Saxon slut, Danish slotte, and Icelandic slóti “bolt, bar, latch”). It may be applied to any kind of lock or fastener. The modern meaning, “a large amount of money,” is from the early 1800’s, when it was used to describe a collection of cards, as in a game of poker.
The term was also used in the early 1900’s to refer to a casino, where men and women would bet on horse races and other sporting events. The casino was a huge showroom, where the various manufacturers displayed their tall machines, with bells and flashing lights. A horde of well-dressed people would crowd the room, pushing buttons and pulling levers, watching cherries and sevens spin on liquid crystal displays. The profits from these machines made casino managers eager to attract new customers and keep existing ones happy. This was done by lowering the house edge, which is the casino’s advantage over the player.
