Poker is a game of cards played by groups of players. Various variants of the game exist; however, all share essential features:
Each player is dealt a pack of cards and must use them to form a hand of five cards. The highest possible hand wins.
In standard games, each card is ranked from highest to lowest, with the Ace being high and the King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8 and 7 being low. The four suits are spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs.
Despite their relative rank, identical hands may tie and divide any winning equally. This is especially true when there are wild cards in the deck, which can take on any suit and rank as desired.
When there are ties, the highest unmatched card breaks the tie. This is called the “high card.”
There are many tells that are used in poker, including shallow breathing, sighing, nostrils flaring, flushing red, eyes watering, blinking, swallowing excessively or an increasing pulse seen in the neck or temple.
A player adopts a poker face when they are not willing to express their emotions or thoughts and do not wish to be noticed by other players. They usually relax their facial muscles so as not to smile or frown while sitting at the table, and they do not fidget. They also do not shake their hand or glance at their chips when a turn comes around to them.
