In our study, participants were asked to play a single-line slot machine for 20 minutes and then complete the remaining surveys on their laptops (GEQ and DASS-21). Unlike previous psychophysiological measures, which involve cumbersome electrodes that likely reduce ecological validity and may inhibit flow, our new measures of reward reactivity are unobtrusive. They are gleaned from the player\u2019s interaction with the simulator via a force transducer mounted underneath the spin button on each slot-machine cabinet.<\/p>\n
The game design team must be able to identify the key factors that appeal to players and then replicate them in the real-world to ensure the slot\u2019s success. This process is ongoing, and the research into players\u2019 experiences reveals that what initially attracts them to a slot may change as they interact with it more often.<\/p>\n
Once the slot is developed, it must undergo rigorous testing and QA to determine its quality and functionality. The test phase includes unit testing, in which individual components are tested to make sure they function as intended; integration testing, where these components are tested together as a complete system; and user acceptance testing, where users are invited to try the slot and find potential bugs. Thorough testing results in fewer bugs and glitches and a better-quality game overall. Once the slot is released, it\u2019s important to update it frequently.
